Axiomlab to Invest in Science Enterprise Centre Projects

Manchester Science Enterprise Centre (MSEC) has launched a pilot scheme with funders Axiomlab PLC, to invest in new high-tech businesses coming out of the region’s universities. A fund of up to £150,000 will be available, which is expected to invest initially in three or four projects. This opportunity will also be open to the University of Liverpool who have recently become part of MSEC.

Manchester Science Enterprise Centre is especially involved in the development of ideas by students particularly those involved in the unique Master of Enterprise programme that is currently offered in the science and engineering departments of the four Greater Manchester universities.

Axiomlab will also then look at supplying the next round of funding to take the ventures forward as successful technology-based regional businesses.

Professor David Auckland, Director of MSEC, commented; “ Start-up capital is urgently needed in the academic sector in order to take good ideas to the next stage of development and Axiomlab has an established track record of funding early stage spin outs in this arena. This new fund highlights their belief in the quality of the opportunities available.”

Fred Mendelsohn, Managing Director of Axiomlab plc commented; “ UK universities produce world class research but often find it difficult to turn these ideas into great businesses. The funding package we have developed with MSEC will provide the essential support for this type of technology transfer.”

Notes to Editors

Manchester Science Enterprise Centre is a partnership between UMIST and The University of Manchester working with Manchester metropolitan University and The University of Salford. The Centre has been awarded £1.5 million from the second round of the Government’s Science Enterprise Challenge in order to expand and incorporate The University of Liverpool as a partner in the Centre.

The expanded Centre will be better placed to develop joint initiatives in collaborative areas, such as research, teaching, business creation and overall marketing. It will also bring a regional focus to academic enterprise and will work alongside the North West Development Agency and other organisations to create more opportunities for wealth creation in the region.

Listed on Aim, Axiomlab plc provides capital and support to early stage businesses that hold intellectual property with strong commercialising potential. Axiomlab adopts a very hands-on approach to their investments, helping them in key areas such as strategic advice, senior hires (executive and non-executive) and sales support.
